Welcome to Pau Pottery Studio, a purpose-built ceramic studio near Sevenoaks, Kent.
Our pottery classes are suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced potters. Whether you have never touched clay before or are looking to develop your existing skills, our relaxed and friendly classes give you the opportunity to learn at your own pace, explore different techniques and enjoy the process of making with clay.
We are a small, welcoming studio where you can learn in a calm and supportive environment, with experienced tutors on hand to guide you throughout your pottery journey.

Our Pottery Classes
Our regular pottery courses run in termly blocks, with each session lasting three hours.
During the course, you can explore both wheel throwing and handbuilding, giving you the opportunity to discover which techniques you enjoy most.
If you're a beginner
If you're new to pottery, we'll introduce you to the basics and guide you through your first projects step by step.
You'll have the opportunity to learn:
- How to prepare and work with clay
- Basic handbuilding techniques
- How to centre and throw clay on the potter's wheel
- How to shape and refine your pots
- Trimming and finishing
- Decorating and glazing
- How pottery is dried, bisque fired and glaze fired
You don't need any previous experience — just come along ready to have a go!
If you already have pottery experience
If you have some experience with pottery, you can continue developing your skills and work on your own projects with guidance from our tutors.
You can choose to concentrate more on wheel throwing, handbuilding or a combination of both, depending on your interests and experience.
Wheel Throwing & Handbuilding
We have six pottery wheels in the studio, as well as a good range of tools and equipment for handbuilding.
Our classes allow you to experience both sides of pottery.
Wheel throwing gives you the opportunity to learn how to turn a lump of clay into bowls, cups, vases and other forms using the potter's wheel.
Handbuilding allows you to create pottery using techniques such as coiling, pinching and slab building, giving you more freedom to create different shapes and designs.
You don't have to choose one technique permanently — you can explore both and see what you enjoy most.
What is included?
Your pottery course includes:
- Three-hour weekly pottery sessions
- Tuition and guidance from experienced tutors
- Use of the pottery wheels and studio equipment
- Pottery tools
- Clay
- Glazing materials
- Tea, coffee, water and refreshments
- Firing of your finished pottery
There is a small additional firing charge of 1p per gram, calculated after your pottery has been bisque fired and glazed.
Our Studio
Pau Pottery Studio is a purpose-built ceramic studio set in the beautiful Kent countryside near Sevenoaks.
The studio is spacious and open-plan, with six pottery wheels, dedicated handbuilding areas and everything you need to enjoy your pottery sessions.
We aim to create a relaxed and welcoming environment where you can slow down, be creative and enjoy some time away from the everyday.
There is parking available at the studio.

We understand that sometimes you may need to miss a class. Where space is available, you may be able to arrange a catch-up session within the same term.
Catch-up sessions must be booked in advance and are subject to availability. The use of the pottery wheel cannot always be guaranteed as regular students have priority. Catch-up sessions cannot be carried forward to a future term.

Private Course
We also offer the option to book a private pottery course for groups of 4 to 8 people, ideal for friends, family, or small groups who would like to learn together in a more personalised setting.
Private courses can be arranged based on availability of dates and times, with a particular possibility for afternoon sessions from 1pm to 4pm. Please get in touch for more informations and to discuss your preferred schedule, and we’ll be happy to organise a course that suits your group.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are your pottery classes suitable for complete beginners?
Yes! Our classes are suitable for complete beginners as well as people with previous pottery experience. We'll introduce you to the basics and guide you through your first projects.
Do I need to bring anything?
Yes, an apron and a small towel to protect your clothes from clay or glazes. Clay, pottery tools, equipment and glazing materials are provided. We also provide tea, coffee and water.
Do you teach wheel throwing?
Yes. We have six pottery wheels and beginners are introduced to wheel throwing during their first sessions. You can then choose whether you'd like to focus more on wheel throwing, handbuilding or a combination of both.
How long is each pottery class?
Each weekly session lasts three hours, from 9:30am–12:30pm for morning classes and 6:00pm–9:00pm for evening classes.
How long is the pottery course?
Courses are booked in blocks according to the term. The current autumn course is 8 weeks.
Can I book individual classes?
Regular pottery courses are booked as a termly course. If you are unable to commit to a full course, please contact us on paupotterystudio@gmail.com as individual sessions may sometimes be available, subject to space.
What happens to the pottery I make?
Your pieces are dried and then bisque fired. You can then glaze your work before it is glaze fired for the final time.
How much does firing cost?

Pau Pottery Studio is located in Halstead Village, near Sevenoaks, Kent, in the TN14 area. The studio is easily accessible from Sevenoaks, Bromley and surrounding areas.
